    Praia do Porto Santo

    • 🏅 Regional network of natural monuments

Nine kilometres of fine, pale sand run along the south coast, from Penedo, next to the harbour, to Calheta in the south-west. The sand is calcareous: it comes from crushed shells, corals and calcareous algae, mixed with a few dark grains of volcanic origin, and is released by the erosion of the dune sandstones (dune sandstones) that cover almost a third of the island. From east to west the beach is known as Penedo, Fontinha, Pedras Pretas, Ribeiro Cochino, Ribeiro Salgado, Cabeço da Ponta and Calheta. Three stretches fly the Blue Flag in 2026 — Fontinha, Ribeiro Salgado and Cabeço da Ponta — and they are also the only ones where lifeguards are guaranteed (Fontinha and Cabeço da Ponta from 15 May to 31 October, Ribeiro Salgado from 1 May to 31 October); elsewhere, follow the flags. The sea is usually calm; the tourist board gives 24–25 °C for the water in high summer, and it drops to about 18 °C in March. Distinctions: one of the 7 Wonders – Beaches of Portugal (dunes category, 2012), Best Beach in Europe 2022 (European Best Destinations) and Europe's Leading Beach Destination 2024 (World Travel Awards). Getting there: on foot from Vila Baleira for Penedo and Fontinha; a cycle path of about 5 km along the ER 111 from Ribeiro Cochino to Calheta; SIGA buses (since July 2024) to Calheta.

    Praia da Fontinha

    • 🏅 Blue Flag 2026

The town beach, in the busiest part of the island. It starts at the Cais Velho and stretches 720 m westwards, ending about 200 m beyond the Hotel Torre Praia, where Pedras Pretas begins (Rua Goulart Medeiros). Facilities: car park, toilets, changing rooms, lockers, a restaurant area, sunshades and sun loungers, and a first-aid post. Lifeguards guaranteed from 15 May to 31 October 2026. It is the most awarded beach in the region: it has flown the Blue Flag since 1989, missing only 1990 (an oil spill) and 1991–1992 (a strike by health technicians and no water analyses); in 2026 the flag flies from 5 June to 30 September. Turquoise water, and everything within walking distance of the centre.

  • 🏔️ Peak

    Pico do Castelo

At 437 m, one of the widest views on the island: the bay, the centre of Vila Baleira and several islets, including Ilhéu da Cal and Ilhéu de Cima. On the summit survive the traces of a small 16th-century fortress built to protect the inhabitants from frequent raids by French pirates; a few cannons are still in place, and the Canhão viewpoint at the foot of the trail is named after them. The peak, now covered in conifers, was once far barer: in the 1920s António Schiappa de Azevedo led its reforestation with crews who carried materials and trees up by hand — his bust stands near the top. Aleppo pines and dragon trees line the classified PS PR2 trail (3.2 or 4.6 km from Moledo; €4.50 for non-residents over 12). A road climbs almost to the summit, where there is a viewpoint and a picnic area.

  • 🏔️ Peak

    Pico Branco

The north-eastern summit, 450 m, the goal of the classified PS PR1 trail. Its slope is the only one on the island that still carries dense native vegetation, protected under Natura 2000 in the Pico Branco – Terra Chã special area of conservation. The trail starts from the Serra de Dentro road and continues to the Terra Chã plateau.

  • 🏔️ Peak

    Pico da Cabrita

Geosite, on the northern road. The undersea volcanic rocks of the island's submarine mountain phase are exposed here: angular fragments of basalt shattered by the thermal shock of lava meeting sea water, cemented into a yellowish breccia. The oldest known on the island are about 19.3 million years old. That this submarine deposit now sits at 200 m of altitude is due to the uplift of the whole island as a block. These rocks, known locally as pedras pretas, were quarried for decades to make pozzolana.

    Miradouro da Portela

Porto Santo's classic lookout, just over a kilometre and a half from the centre at the eastern tip of the island. An avenue of palm trees and a windmill set the scene; below lies the whole south coast, with Vila Baleira in the middle, the golden beach and the turquoise sea, the Porto de Abrigo and the marina, then Pico de Baixo and Ilhéu de Cima. The Portela windmills, symbols of the island, are a short walk away. A few minutes further, a staircase at the place called Casinhas leads to the chapel of Nossa Senhora da Graça, standing alone on the slope of Pico do Castelo: founded in 1533, destroyed in 1812 and rebuilt in the 20th century, it houses a 16th-century Virgin from a Flemish workshop and often served as a refuge for islanders during pirate raids. Its feast, one of the island's best attended, is held on 15 August.

    Miradouro das Flores

On the south-west coast: leave the main road, pass the Centro Hípico and turn left. From here the view takes in the nine kilometres of beach, Ilhéu de Baixo (or da Cal), Ilhéu de Ferro and Ilhéu de Cima and, weather permitting, the Desertas and Madeira; the contrast between the gold of the sand and the turquoise of the sea is striking. The site holds the bust of the painter Francisco Maya (1915–1993). You can also ride up on horseback with the nearby equestrian centre. From the junction for the viewpoint, a road and then a steep path drop to the pebble cove of Zimbralinho, tucked between Cabeço das Flores and Morenos.

    Miradouro Terra Chã

On the east coast, at the end of the classified PS PR1 trail (2.7 km, about 1:30 from the road). The Terra Chã plateau belongs to the Natura 2000 network: it is the place on the island with the largest number of well-preserved specimens of native flora. A stone house serves as a base for the team reintroducing endemic plants and carrying out scientific studies. Cypresses planted in the early 20th century, white lichens known as "urzela" (Rocella sp.) on the rocks and, all around, Vila Baleira, Ilhéu de Cima and Pico Branco (450 m, the island's second-highest peak). The path was originally opened to bring farm produce down by donkey. Paid access (€4.50) and booking via SIMplifica since 2026.

    Ilhéu da Cal

    • 🏅 Network of marine protected areas (2008)

The highest of the six islets (179 m), off Ponta da Calheta and some 500 m from the shore. Its name comes from lime: its reef limestones — fossil corals 15.2 million years old, carbonate deposits and undersea volcanic rocks 12 to 16 million years old, capped by dune sandstones — were tunnelled with galleries to make lime, an industry that employed a good part of the population in the 19th century; the galleries can be seen from Calheta beach. Geosite, Natura 2000 site PTPOR0001, marine core of the Biosphere Reserve and of the Marine Protected Areas Network: Cory's shearwaters, Bulwer's petrels and storm petrels nest here, and the LIFE project (2010–2015) eradicated its mice. A no-entry zone: landing requires IFCN authorisation; admire it from the sea, by kayak or boat from Ponta da Calheta, where a large cave opens in its flanks.

    Réserve de Biosphère UNESCO

    • 🏅 UNESCO Biosphere Reserve (28 October 2020)

Since 2020 Porto Santo, its six islets and the island shelf down to 100 m depth have formed a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve: 27,310 hectares, 5,060 on land and 22,251 at sea. The terrestrial core zones are the Natura 2000 sites of Pico Branco (133 ha) and the islets, with the Terra Chã forest core; the marine core surrounds Ilhéu da Cal and Ilhéu de Cima. The reserve holds more than 1,600 terrestrial taxa, including some fifteen plants found only on the island, one of the richest land-snail faunas of any oceanic island (about 82 % endemic), seabird colonies, the monk seal and the loggerhead turtle. Tourism is the leading economic sector: the reserve bets on development compatible with conservation.

    Ilhéu de Cima

    • 🏅 Network of marine protected areas (2008)

The nearest of the islets, 380 m off the south-eastern tip; also called Ilhéu do Farol or dos Dragoeiros. A 32 ha rock rising to 111 m, it carries the lighthouse lit in May 1901, the first seen by ships arriving from Europe. Two geosites: Pedra do Sol, a mega pillow lava with radial jointing among submarine flows, 12-to-16-million-year-old fossil limestones and coral reefs; and Cabeço das Laranjas, a heap of fossil calcareous algae — calcareous red algae 15 to 14 million years old — that look like oranges. Colonies of Cory's shearwaters and Bulwer's petrels, exclusive snails Hystricella turricula and Idiomela subplicata; its rabbits were eradicated by the LIFE project. Natura 2000 PTPOR0001, a no-entry zone: visits only with IFCN authorisation — admire it from Portela or by boat.

    Casa Museu Cristóvão Colombo

The house where, according to oral tradition, Christopher Columbus lived after marrying Filipa Moniz: two early-16th-century Gothic-arched windows open in its north wall, and the present ensemble on Travessa da Sacristia was unified by works in the 18th and 19th centuries. The museum opened in 1989 and was redesigned in 2004 around Portuguese and Spanish expansion, with a space devoted to the Dutch colonial empire and part of the treasure of the Slot ter Hooge, the VOC ship wrecked off the north of the island in 1724; also a late-15th-century Iberian processional cross and an early-17th-century Japanese missal stand. Columbus called again at Porto Santo in 1498. Hours: weekdays 10am–12.30pm and 2–5.30pm, Sunday 10am–1pm, closed Mondays and holidays; fee on site.

    Igreja Nossa Senhora da Piedade

Porto Santo's mother church, on Largo do Pelourinho, on the site of the island's first chapel. Built between 1430 and 1446 and raised to a parish in 1500, pillaged and almost destroyed by French corsairs in 1566 and burnt several times, it was completely rebuilt in 1667. The Gothic Morgada chapel on the south side is the last trace of the 15th-century building. A modest façade, a single nave and a chancel beneath a polychrome rocaille wooden ceiling; altars and paintings by Martim Conrado and Max Römer. Nossa Senhora da Piedade is the island's patron, celebrated on the last weekend of August.

    Largo do Pelourinho

The heart of Vila Baleira is a triangular square planted with palms, bougainvillea and dragon trees — the Macaronesian tree whose red resin, "dragon's blood", was used in dyes, varnishes and remedies. It links the old town hall, part of which dates from the 16th century, to the mother church, built on the island's first chapel (1420–1446). A step away on Rua Cristóvão Colombo stands the small 16th-century Mannerist Misericórdia chapel and, on the other side, the new town hall and the Centro Cultural e de Congressos, where the town's main events take place. Terrace cafés; stages for the Columbus Festival in September.

  • 📍 Sítio

    Vila Baleira

The island's only town and the seat of the municipality: the town hall, the church of Nossa Senhora da Piedade, the Casa Colombo, the tourist office, the library and the Centro Cultural e de Congressos all sit within a few blocks, between the Largo do Pelourinho and the seafront. It was raised to the rank of cidade by regional legislative decree 18/96/M of 6 August 1996; before that it was a vila, which is where its name comes from. Everything starts here: the beach begins at the end of the avenue, the Cais Velho reaches out in front of the Infante garden, and the roads to the northern and western sítios leave from the Largo das Palmeiras.

  • 📍 Sítio

    Campo de Baixo

The sítio on the south-western coast, 2.4 km from Vila Baleira, set back from the Ribeiro Salgado and Cabeço da Ponta stretches of beach: most of the island's hotels are here. The chapel of Espírito Santo, with its Flemish paintings, stands in this sítio, and the blessed-bread feast is held here in late July or early August. The cycle path along the ER 111 runs through it.

  • 📍 Sítio

    Campo de Cima

The farming plateau above the town, 2 km to the west: this is the flat, cultivated part of the island, where the royal charter of 1770 had vines planted in the sand, and where the airport was built in 1960. The name sets this upper field against Campo de Baixo, the lower field, down by the sea.
