A monument on the Alameda do Infante, near the old pier, where the Promenade begins. A tower of square basalt sections whose faces carry reliefs devoted to the figures and episodes of Portuguese maritime expansion, Prince Henry foremost among them. The work is signed by the sculptor António Aragão and was unveiled on 28 August 1960. Islanders call it the Pau de Sabão, the bar of soap, because of its shape.
