Budget and tips

  • Transport5–15 €/day
  • Activities35–60 €/activity
  • Total budget~120–250 €/day
Essential tips12
  • Sun

SPF 50+ essential — very intense UV even on cloudy days.

  • Cash

Bring cash — some restaurants and markets don't accept cards.

  • Network

Decent 4G coverage on the beach and in town, limited in the mountains.

  • Swimming

Respect the flags — strong currents possible in winter.

  • Hiking

Booking required since January 2026 for the three classified trails: 30-minute slots, €4.50 a person, free for residents and children up to 12.

  • Ferry

Book the round trip in advance in July-August — often fully booked.

  • Islets: permit required

Landing on the islets requires prior authorisation from the IFCN. They are listed under Natura 2000 and in the Porto Santo network of marine protected areas. Boat trips that sail round them do not land.

  • Biosphere Reserve

The whole island has been a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve since 2020. Keep to the paths, take away no sand, pebbles or fossils, pick no plants and carry your rubbish out. The municipality runs the LIFE DUNAS programme on the dune belt and 'Porto Santo sem Lixo Marinho' on marine litter.

  • Palm trees: move nothing

The municipality runs the SOS Palmeiras programme against the red palm weevil. Do not move palm fronds, trunks or soil from one part of the island to another, and report a sick palm to the municipal services.

  • Accessible beach

The municipality runs the 'Praia Acessível — Praia para Todos' programme. The equipment and the stretches concerned are signposted on site and listed on cm-portosanto.pt.

  • Municipal tourist tax

Porto Santo applies a municipal tourist tax, collected by accommodation providers. Ask your accommodation or the town hall for the current amount.

  • The water comes from the sea

All the island's drinking water is desalinated: the plant, opened in 1980, draws sea water through galleries under the beach, treats it by reverse osmosis and remineralises it. It is expensive to produce — please do not waste it.
