Forte de São José

The small fort that guarded the town's anchorage, built in the Pombaline period to protect Vila Baleira from the corsairs who had sacked it several times. It served as the Casa dos Governadores, as barracks for British troops in 1801 and 1807, as a prison, and from 1921 as a Guarda Fiscal post. Eight iron cannon, from a British galleon, are kept there.
