Visit Porto Santo

Specialities27

What is eaten and drunk here, from bread to poncha. Some recipes belong to the island, others come from the whole archipelago.

  • Bolo do caco

Round wheat bread baked on the caco, a slab of basalt, clay or iron heated over embers; It is said to have been born in Porto Santo, as a way to use leftover dough. The island's version is taller and wider than Madeira's and, according to the Biosphere Reserve, contains no sweet potato. Eaten warm with garlic-and-parsley butter, with an espetada or as a prego.

🗓️ All year · in summer the Ribeiro Cochino stalls sell it with fruit

  • Lapas (grilled limpets)

Limpets grilled in the shell with garlic butter, a classic of the whole archipelago. Regional rules protect them: minimum size 40 mm, closed season from 1 December to 31 March, up to 3 kg a day per person without a licence, and no gathering by diving inside the marine reserve.

🗓️ April to November, outside the closed season

  • Poncha

Sugar-cane spirit, honey or sugar and lemon, whisked with the wooden mexelote: born in Câmara de Lobos to warm the fishermen and adapted in the 18th century from Indian panche. The "Poncha da Madeira" geographical indication (2014) is reserved for Madeira and Porto Santo; fruit variants — passion fruit, tangerine, English tomato, mint — come with a dentinho.

🗓️ All year, in the poncha bars of Vila Baleira

  • Porto Santo wine — Listrão & Caracol

White wines from Listrão — the Palomino fino, "queen of the white grapes" — and Caracol, two grapes of the island grown on calcareous sand behind dry-stone croché walls; vine-growing took off with the royal charter of 1770. The grapes travel to Madeira for vinification: in 2025 nearly 17 tonnes went to Justino's, and the Profetas e Villões company bottles Listrão and Caracol. Since late 2020 the LIFE Dunas project has been replanting both grapes in the dunes to fix the sand.

🗓️ Festa das Vindimas, late August: public press and tastings in the town centre

  • Escarpiada

A thin cornmeal flatbread, eaten all year with gaiado, grilled horse mackerel, a serralhas salad or raw limpets.

  • Gaiado seco (sun-dried skipjack)

Skipjack salted and dried in the sun, much prized on the island: grilled or pickled in escabeche, or boiled with potatoes and raw or cooked onion.
