The Golden Beach13

The great beach of Porto Santo — 9 km of therapeutic golden sand — is the heart of the island. Its sand is recognised as unique in the world and has been used in psammotherapy for centuries.

  • Origin of the sand

Calcareous sand: crushed shells, corals and calcareous algae

A few dark grains come from volcanic rocks. The sand is released by the erosion of dune sandstones (calcareous sandstones) that cover about a third of the island and exceed 40 m in thickness at Fonte da Areia; it rests on a rocky slab, the lajedo.

  • Mineral composition

    Calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, sulphur, strontium

  • Length

9 km of fine sand · dune belt of about 7 km

From Penedo, by the harbour, to Calheta in the south-west. The wide bay combines beach and dune field over almost 7 km.

  • Blue Flag 2026

Fontinha · Ribeiro Salgado · Cabeço da Ponta

Flag flown until 30 September 2026 (from 5 June at Fontinha and Ribeiro Salgado, 1 June at Cabeço da Ponta). Calheta flew it in 2024 but leaves the list in 2026. Madeira's first Blue Flags were raised in 1989, one of them at Fontinha.

  • Bathing season 2026

    Lifeguards guaranteed on 3 stretches

Fontinha and Cabeço da Ponta from 15 May to 31 October, Ribeiro Salgado from 1 May to 31 October. Penedo, Pedras Pretas, Ribeiro Cochino, Lagoa, Calheta and Porto das Salemas are designated bathing waters from 1 June to 30 September with no surveillance guaranteed by the national order: follow the flags and the "praia não vigiada" signs.

  • Psammotherapy

Hot sand baths: 20 min in a tub at 40–42 °C, or outdoors

At the Geomedicine Centre of the Hotel Porto Santo (2008), two baths a day for a week under medical advice; outdoors, on the dry sand between beach and dune. Indications described by the University of Aveiro: osteoarthritis, recovery from fractures and sprains, rheumatism, fibromyalgia.

    Praia do Porto Santo

    • 🏅 Regional network of natural monuments

Nine kilometres of fine, pale sand run along the south coast, from Penedo, next to the harbour, to Calheta in the south-west. The sand is calcareous: it comes from crushed shells, corals and calcareous algae, mixed with a few dark grains of volcanic origin, and is released by the erosion of the dune sandstones (dune sandstones) that cover almost a third of the island. From east to west the beach is known as Penedo, Fontinha, Pedras Pretas, Ribeiro Cochino, Ribeiro Salgado, Cabeço da Ponta and Calheta. Three stretches fly the Blue Flag in 2026 — Fontinha, Ribeiro Salgado and Cabeço da Ponta — and they are also the only ones where lifeguards are guaranteed (Fontinha and Cabeço da Ponta from 15 May to 31 October, Ribeiro Salgado from 1 May to 31 October); elsewhere, follow the flags. The sea is usually calm; the tourist board gives 24–25 °C for the water in high summer, and it drops to about 18 °C in March. Distinctions: one of the 7 Wonders – Beaches of Portugal (dunes category, 2012), Best Beach in Europe 2022 (European Best Destinations) and Europe's Leading Beach Destination 2024 (World Travel Awards). Getting there: on foot from Vila Baleira for Penedo and Fontinha; a cycle path of about 5 km along the ER 111 from Ribeiro Cochino to Calheta; SIGA buses (since July 2024) to Calheta.

  • 🏝️ Beach

    Praia da Fontinha

    • 🏅 Blue Flag 2026

The town beach, in the busiest part of the island. It starts at the Cais Velho and stretches 720 m westwards, ending about 200 m beyond the Hotel Torre Praia, where Pedras Pretas begins (Rua Goulart Medeiros). Facilities: car park, toilets, changing rooms, lockers, a restaurant area, sunshades and sun loungers, and a first-aid post. Lifeguards guaranteed from 15 May to 31 October 2026. It is the most awarded beach in the region: it has flown the Blue Flag since 1989, missing only 1990 (an oil spill) and 1991–1992 (a strike by health technicians and no water analyses); in 2026 the flag flies from 5 June to 30 September. Turquoise water, and everything within walking distance of the centre.
