Facts16

Born of a volcano

  • A volcano under the sea

The island was born about 18 million years ago

Porto Santo first grew under water, then surfaced some 14 million years ago. The last eruptions are about 8 million years old: the island is older than Madeira.

  • A lifted island

Rocks formed under the sea now sit more than 300 m above it

The whole island was lifted: limestone and marine fossils about 14 million years old sit high on the slopes. Enough to make Porto Santo a playground for geologists.

  • The peaks are chimneys

What still stands is the volcano's vent, harder than the rest

Pico do Castelo, Pico do Facho and Pico de Ana Ferreira are old chimneys: the rock that filled them resisted erosion while the volcano around them wore away. At Pico de Ana Ferreira the lava cracked into regular columns: the « Piano », uncovered by an old quarry and now listed.

  • Golden sand, not volcanic

9 km of sand made of crushed shells, corals and algae

A limestone sand, very pale and very soft: it comes from the erosion of the dune sandstones that still cover about a third of the island. The beach is listed as a natural monument.

  • The sand that heals

Hot sand baths for aching joints

In summer the sand reaches 65 °C at the surface and 40 °C ten centimetres down. Heated, it releases calcium and magnesium: this is sand therapy, an island tradition. Three sands in the world have that reputation: Porto Santo, Guarapari in Brazil, Beppu and Ibusuki in Japan.

  • Salão, the green clay

A clay found nowhere else in Portugal, once used for roofs

At Serra de Dentro, green ravines: a clay born from the weathering of undersea volcanic rock. The old casas de salão roofed their houses with it.

  • Porto das Salemas

Turquoise natural pools at low tide

On the north coast, a hard-to-reach corner reveals turquoise natural pools at low tide, below cliffs streaked with lava dykes.

Alive

  • Plants found nowhere else

About 536 species, 15 of them found only on Porto Santo

The dragon tree, the wild olive and the juniper of Pico Branco recall the original forest; the pines on the heights were planted from the 1950s. Pico Branco and Terra Chã shelter the island's best-preserved flora.

  • The dragon tree

The tree with « dragon's blood », under threat

Its red resin was used as a remedy. It grows slowly: 1.2 m in ten years. On Porto Santo it is one of the few survivors of the original vegetation.

  • A paradise for snails

One of the richest snail faunas of any oceanic island

More than 80 % of the species exist nowhere else, and some live on a single islet. Their fossil shells fill the island's sandstones.

  • Birds of land and sea

59 species, 13 of them endemic; shearwaters and petrels nest on the islets

Madeira buzzard and linnet, Berthelot's pipit, kestrel… On the islets of Cima, Cal and Ferro nest Cory's shearwater, Bulwer's petrel and the Madeiran storm petrel. The rare Kentish plover nests on the beaches: give it room.

  • Dolphins, whales and the monk seal

Bottlenose dolphin, sperm whale, loggerhead turtle… and the rarest seal in the world

All year round the reserve's waters host bottlenose and common dolphins, sperm whales and loggerhead turtles. The Mediterranean monk seal, « the rarest in the world », is reported here.

Protected

  • UNESCO Biosphere Reserve

27,310 hectares listed on 28 October 2020, 22,251 of them at sea

The whole island, its six islets and the sea around them down to 100 m. The heart of the reserve: Pico Branco and the islets. Stay on the paths and take no sand or pebbles home.

  • Six islets, a protected sea

Marine reserve since 2008: diving yes, commercial fishing no

Around the islets the sea is protected. You may dive and fish with a line from the shore; commercial fishing, limpet picking while diving and sand removal are forbidden. Landing on an islet requires a permit.

  • The dunes rebuilt

Five years of work (2020–2025) to remake the dune belt

Between Ponta and Calheta the damaged dune was rebuilt and replanted with local species, and the traditional vineyards behind it revived. The dune protects the island from the rising sea.

  • Palm trees in danger

The red palm weevil reached the island in October 2023

A beetle from Asia bores into the trunks and kills the palms from the inside. The town sets traps and fells the infested trees: do not move fronds or trunks.

The six islets6

Six rocks set around the island, each with its own character: a lighthouse, a cave that roars, lime galleries… Admire them from the coast or from a boat; landing on them requires a permit.

  • 🌿 Nature💎 Hidden gem

    Ilhéu da Cal

    • 🏅 Network of marine protected areas (2008)

The highest of the six islets (179 m), off Ponta da Calheta and some 500 m from the shore. Its name comes from lime: its reef limestones — fossil corals 15.2 million years old, carbonate deposits and undersea volcanic rocks 12 to 16 million years old, capped by dune sandstones — were tunnelled with galleries to make lime, an industry that employed a good part of the population in the 19th century; the galleries can be seen from Calheta beach. Geosite, Natura 2000 site PTPOR0001, marine core of the Biosphere Reserve and of the Marine Protected Areas Network: Cory's shearwaters, Bulwer's petrels and storm petrels nest here, and the LIFE project (2010–2015) eradicated its mice. A no-entry zone: landing requires IFCN authorisation; admire it from the sea, by kayak or boat from Ponta da Calheta, where a large cave opens in its flanks.

    Ilhéu de Cima

    • 🏅 Network of marine protected areas (2008)

The nearest of the islets, 380 m off the south-eastern tip; also called Ilhéu do Farol or dos Dragoeiros. A 32 ha rock rising to 111 m, it carries the lighthouse lit in May 1901, the first seen by ships arriving from Europe. Two geosites: Pedra do Sol, a mega pillow lava with radial jointing among submarine flows, 12-to-16-million-year-old fossil limestones and coral reefs; and Cabeço das Laranjas, a heap of fossil calcareous algae — calcareous red algae 15 to 14 million years old — that look like oranges. Colonies of Cory's shearwaters and Bulwer's petrels, exclusive snails Hystricella turricula and Idiomela subplicata; its rabbits were eradicated by the LIFE project. Natura 2000 PTPOR0001, a no-entry zone: visits only with IFCN authorisation — admire it from Portela or by boat.

    Ilhéu de Ferro

    • 🏅 Network of marine protected areas (2008)

Facing Ponta da Canavieira at the western tip, a rocky triangle with high cliffs and a flat top (115 m). On its eastern side, Ponta da Chaminé hides a blowhole cave that sprays seawater in heavy swell; to the north, the Furna que Berra "roars" beneath the waves. Remarkable endemic fauna: the tarantulas Hogna biscoitoi and Hogna schmitzi, the snail Leptaxis nivosa, and nesting seabirds. A former lighthouse, now out of use, crowns the islet. Natura 2000 PTPOR0001 and Marine Protected Areas Network: access only with IFCN authorisation.

Nature places13

Springs, green ravines, headlands beaten by the waves, a planted forest: the corners of nature to see with your own eyes.

  • 🌿 Nature

    Réserve de Biosphère UNESCO

    • 🏅 UNESCO Biosphere Reserve (28 October 2020)

Since 2020 Porto Santo, its six islets and the island shelf down to 100 m depth have formed a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve: 27,310 hectares, 5,060 on land and 22,251 at sea. The terrestrial core zones are the Natura 2000 sites of Pico Branco (133 ha) and the islets, with the Terra Chã forest core; the marine core surrounds Ilhéu da Cal and Ilhéu de Cima. The reserve holds more than 1,600 terrestrial taxa, including some fifteen plants found only on the island, one of the richest land-snail faunas of any oceanic island (about 82 % endemic), seabird colonies, the monk seal and the loggerhead turtle. Tourism is the leading economic sector: the reserve bets on development compatible with conservation.

  • 🌿 Nature💎 Hidden gem

    Pico de Ana Ferreira

The highest point on the western side of the island (283 m), famous for its "piano": a set of almost perfect light-grey prismatic columns that in fact look more like organ pipes. They are lava, a volcanic rock split into prisms by the contraction stresses of magma cooling slowly inside a volcanic conduit; the former quarry that exposed them is geosite, listed as a property of regional value and geological heritage in the municipal master plan. The best vantage point is the Miradouro da Pedreira, close to the golf course and 144 m from the paved road; a footpath starts from the slopes where the São Pedro chapel stands, a 17th-century building altered in the 18th century whose pebble-paved churchyard depicts a caravel. Legend has it that the Ana Ferreira cave sheltered an illegitimate daughter of King João II.

    Fonte da Areia

On the north coast, Porto Santo's historic spring: its water, once held sacred, was said to be the purest on the island, and an 18th-century fountain still stands nearby. In the 19th century, together with Tanque and Fontinha, it was one of the island's only three springs. All around, pale sandstone cliffs carved by the wind: dune sandstones, biogenic carbonate sandstones piled up over the last two million years, the oldest about 31,000 years old. Four units separated by palaeosols, calcareous crusts ("laginhas de cal"), root casts and fossil land snails tell of former vegetated landscapes under prevailing northerly winds. Geosite, scientific heritage and a natural area of strongly restricted use, 25 m from the road with easy access. From the viewpoint: Ilhéu da Fonte da Areia and the north coast; this is also where the walk down to the Porto das Salemas pools begins.

Curiosities11

  • A volcano under the sea — The island was born about 18 million years ago

Porto Santo first grew under water, then surfaced some 14 million years ago. The last eruptions are about 8 million years old: the island is older than Madeira.

  • Fonte da Areia — Fossil dunes 31,000 years old

These cliffs of hardened sand keep root casts, limestone crusts and snail shells: green landscapes of long ago, swept by the north wind. The spring, once held sacred, gave the purest water on the island; an 18th-century fountain still stands beside it.

  • The Ana Ferreira « Piano » — Stone columns like the keys of a piano

As it cooled inside the volcano's vent, the lava cracked into regular columns. The old quarry that uncovered them is now listed. One small snail lives nowhere else.

  • Zimbralinho and Morenos — Pillow lavas born under the sea

At Zimbralinho, the island's finest pillow lavas, frozen under water. At Morenos, lava dykes, 30,000-year-old fossil dunes with their root casts, and the shells of snails now extinct.
