Pedra do Sol (Ilhéu de Cima)

Geosite, on the south-western flank of Ilhéu de Cima. A submarine flow left a giant pillow lava here whose cut face shows radial column-shaped cracking: as it solidified under water the lava contracted and fractured in rays from the centre. Around it lie fossil coral reefs, concentrations of calcareous algae (fossil calcareous algae) and fossilised sea urchins of the genus Clypeaster. Visiting the islets requires prior authorisation from the IFCN.
